How to cancel Super Duolingo

In the app, tap the Super icon, then the gear, Manage subscription and Cancel subscription, and confirm with Google Play, the App Store or Alipay. On the web, it is your profile picture, Settings, Super Duolingo, then Cancel subscription. Your streak and progress stay, and Super lasts to the end of the period.

Cancel where you subscribed

Duolingo's help center puts the rule first: "You will need to cancel your subscription based on how you originally started the subscription." Super can start in the iPhone app, the Android app or a web browser. Duolingo Max is sold only in the apps, so a Max plan always runs through the app store you used.

How to cancel in the Duolingo app

  1. Open the Duolingo app.
  2. Tap the Super icon at the top of the home screen.
  3. Tap the gear icon for Settings.
  4. Tap Manage subscription.
  5. Select Cancel subscription and carry on through the screens.
  6. Confirm the cancellation with Google Play, the App Store or Alipay.

If Apple bills you, Apple's Settings list works as well, the same way you cancel any subscription on iPhone. On an App Store free trial, Apple's rule is to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. If you started Super in your phone's settings rather than in the app, Duolingo sends iPhone users to Apple's instructions and asks Android users to submit a support request.

How to cancel on the web

  1. Sign in to your Duolingo account in a web browser.
  2. Click your profile picture at the top of the home screen and choose Settings.
  3. Select Super Duolingo.
  4. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

What happens after you cancel

Less than people fear. Duolingo says "Your streak and learning progress will not be affected." You keep Super features for the rest of the period you paid for, automatic billing stops, and you can reactivate whenever you like. The free version you go back to has the same lessons, because Duolingo offers the same lesson content to all users. Change your mind before the period ends, and your Profile in the app offers Keep my Subscription.

The money side is firmer. "Canceling your subscription will not retroactively refund subscription payments", and fees already charged aren't prorated by the cancel date. Duolingo's refund page adds that in-app purchases are generally nonrefundable. Apple handles refunds for iPhone subscriptions, and web and Android subscribers can ask Duolingo support to review a request.

Family Plan and Max

"Only the family manager can manage the subscription." The manager adds and removes members from the Super dashboard in the app. Joining works the other way round: someone with a paid subscription of their own has to cancel it and wait for it to expire before they can join a family plan.

Max includes everything in Super plus AI features, and it can't be bought or used on the web. When you upgrade from Super to Max through Apple, Apple bills the full Max price and refunds the unused part of Super pro rata.

The mistake that keeps you paying

Deleting the app, or the whole account, and calling it done. Duolingo says plainly that neither cancels the subscription, so the store or Duolingo keeps billing until you cancel in the place you subscribed. Cancel there first, delete whatever you like afterwards, and note the date your Super period ends.

Keeping Super? Keep the renewal date
