How to cancel PlayStation Plus

Cancelling PlayStation Plus stops the next renewal. The membership stays active until the next payment date, then the monthly games, online multiplayer and online storage go with it. Cancel on the web in Account Management, or on a PS5 under Settings, then Users and Accounts.

What cancelling actually does

Cancelling PlayStation Plus stops the next renewal, not the membership you already paid for. PlayStation's wording: "Once you cancel your subscription, it'll be deactivated starting from the next payment date." Until then you keep everything, so cancelling early in the month costs you nothing. Change your mind before that date and you can choose Reactivate Subscription.

How to cancel PlayStation Plus on the web

  1. Sign in to Account Management on playstation.com.
  2. Select Subscription from the menu on the left of the screen.
  3. Select Cancel Subscription next to PlayStation Plus.

The web route works whichever console you own, and it is the quickest one if you are not sitting in front of the TV.

How to cancel PlayStation Plus on PS5

  1. Go to Settings > Users and Accounts.
  2. Select Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions > PlayStation Plus.
  3. Select Cancel Subscription.

On PS4

Sony's help pages give more than one route on PS4. The cancel page goes through PlayStation Plus, then Manage Membership, then Subscription. Another page goes through Settings, Account Management, Account Information, then Subscriptions. Both end at Cancel Subscription. If the menus on your console don't match either one, use the web route above.

Refunds and the 14-day window

Sony's US policy: "You can cancel your purchase of a subscription and request a refund within 14 days from the initial transaction date, even after you start using the subscription." The refund can be reduced for the time you used. After that window, cancelling "will stop future subscription fees being taken, but you will not receive a refund for payments already made."

A free trial counts inside the same 14 days, and when it ends it turns into a paid subscription automatically. The rules differ outside the US, so read the PlayStation Store cancellation policy for your country.

Don't leave it to the last hour

Sony's US pages say you can cancel up until the next payment date. Its European membership guide is stricter. Cancel "less than 24 hours before payment is due" and you are charged for the next period. Treat the day before the renewal as your deadline wherever you live.

What you lose when it ends

"Once your PlayStation Plus subscription ends you will lose access to all PlayStation Plus benefits such as monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer." Monthly games you downloaded stop working. Discounted purchases, redeemed packs and avatars stay yours. Games from the catalog play only while the subscription is valid.

Online storage is the one to deal with before the date. Download any saves you care about from online storage to the console first. Sony's help pages don't say how long saves are kept after a membership ends, so don't count on finding them later.

The mistake that keeps you paying

Expecting an empty wallet to stop the renewal. Sony's terms close that door: "If your wallet doesn't have enough funds when an automatic recurring subscription payment is due, the balance will be automatically funded from the default payment method on record to cover the subscription fee." Spending the wallet down changes nothing, and only cancelling does. If you keep PlayStation Plus for a few more months, get a reminder before the next charge so the decision happens before the payment does.

Playing less this season?

Put PlayStation Plus in Subby with its payment date, and the reminder arrives before the renewal with the amount and the card on it. As the date gets close, Home lists it among the next payments. Free to use, with ads, and no account or bank login.
